Adeola Oke: [00:00:36] Hello, everybody. Welcome to the Wellness Surge Podcast. My name is Dr. Adeola Oke. I have worn several hats in the healthcare field, and I’m very passionate about health and wellbeing, especially using researched natural means to heal. My backgrounds are: I used to be a nurse, but once a nurse, always a nurse; I’m a pharmacist; and I also have a public health degree. 

So today we’re going to be talking about stress. Are you under stress? Okay. Nice one. So what is stress? Well, there’s several ways to define stress, but we all had that feeling before I like ‘Oh, I’m feeling stressed’. Things are not going. Right. Think like you, you have this deadline due and you’re like, I gotta get it done.

That is stress, right. That is short term stress. And that is good because it gives you the motive, the push to get your work done. But the stress I’m talking about today, it’s not that type of stress. That one is good stress, but stress that goes on day in, day out, like you never get a chance to switch off.

And that’s what happens in our modern day life today. We’re constantly going, going, going. We on the on switch, we don’t get a chance to turn it off and relax. That’s the type of stress I’m talking about today and that stress is not good for us. That is chronic stress. And modern day life, is field with chronic stress. From stressors, from the television, from the politics from the civil unrest, lot’s of stress going around. So World Health Organization considers stress to be the epidemic of the 21st century. And that should not be taken lightly because they’re telling us that stress is the root cause of many chronic diseases that we are seeing today. And if you want to even look at it, 90% of illnesses are due to lifestyle and stress and are not due to your genetics. So what is that telling us. 90% percent of illnesses can be controlled by your lifestyle and your stress. 

Okay. So what does this type of stress that I’m talking about, what can it do to your body? So like, I’ve talked about the good stress, right. But what can that constant on switch that we constantly are in, what can it do to your body?

Well, it can wreck havoc on your body. We can start with the head. If you start to notice that you’re starting to notice some hair loss, guess what? You may be stress. You’re having this headache that just does not want to go away. And it starts to affect your mental wellbeing. Even chronic stress can start to affect your brain matter and course like even mental illness. 

Okay. So that’s the head. It starts to affect your trouble sleeping because you’re constantly on the on. Your mind cannot get a chance to rest an you have trouble sleeping? Um, what else? 

Well, Blood sugar -because the body is stressed. It releases something called cortisol. Cortisol is the main root cause of many of the bad things that happen in the body that are associated with stress. It can affect your blood sugars, making your blood sugar higher-most of the time. And the high blood sugar can, long-term, lead to diabetes. Well, diabetes can long-term affect the kidneys, affect your heart- like heart attack can cause some numbness, tingling, nerve pain. Some people lose their feet because of the diabetes. So it was just one thing, right? Stress, high blood sugar, and the list goes on. Also stress cause chest pain affect your heart, cause heart disease, and can cause elevated blood pressure. Okay, elevated blood pressure.

And that one also has this spiral effect, right? Elevated blood pressure leads to so many other things down the line- heart attack, stroke. Where did it start from? Stress.

 What else? Stress can affect your immunity. In this day and age of COVID, in this day and age of the flu, we want to boost our immunity as much as we can.

All right. So we don’t need stress, lowering our immunity. What else can stress do? It can cause you to have upset stomach. And also, you know, that belly fat, that is a rea- that is hanging around your waist. IWell guess what? It could be due to stress, stress, stress, stress. And that weight that you’ve been trying to let go of- that you’re doing all, everything.
